Thesis Title: "Between Organic and Inorganic: Isamu Noguchi's Abstract Landscape Metaphors of the 1960s and 1970s"

About

I am an artist and art historian, conducting research on transcultural exchanges in art and architecture between Japan, Europe and the United States after World War II. I am challenging the impact of science and technology as apparent global paradigms in the space and electronic age.

In my thesis, I am aiming to complicate the perception of Isamu Noguchi's postwar landscapes seen through the lens of Japanese-ness, by reflecting on his collaboration with physicians, biologists and architects, his incorporation of new technologies and his own technological inventions, in short presenting him as part of a scientific and technological environment of the 1960s and 1970s. Beyond international architectural and scientific discourses, I am charting Noguchi's understanding of science and technology and their benefit for humanity, while simultaneously challenging their role in the construction and perception of nationness in a global society.
